Etymology edit
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *púHyas, ultimately from *puH- (“putrid, foul; pus”). Cognate with Ancient Greek πῦον (pûon, “discharge from a sore”), Latin pūs (“pus”), Old English fūl (whence English foul). The Sanskrit root is पूय् (pūy), reflecting the interpretation of the semivowel in पूयति (pūyati) as part of the root and not the conjugation.
