From Old Marathi 𑘦𑘹𑘩𑘹𑘽 (meleṃ), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀅 (maa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-illa-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀫𑀢 (mata) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-illa-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit मृत (mṛtá), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *mr̥tás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥tás, from Proto-Indo-European *mr̥tós (“dead”), from *mer- (“to die”). Doublet of मुडदा (muḍdā) and मृत (mŕt). Cognate with Hindi मुआ (muā), Gujarati મૂઉં (mūũ), Kachchi મુઓ (muo).
