Etymology edit

Probably from वप् (vap, to scatter, strew), with parallel semantic developments (albeit via different roots) across Indo-European, such as with Ancient Greek δέρμα (dérma, skin, hide) and δέρω (dérō, to skin, flay), as well as English skin from the verbal to noun senses. The derivation from Proto-Indo-European *wamp- (membrane (of bowels), intestines, womb) (compare Old English womb, wamb (whence English womb)) is less likely.
