From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰáwmas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáwmas, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéw-mo-s, from *ǵʰew- (to pour). Cognate with Ancient Greek χεῦμᾰ (kheûma, that which is poured), χέω (khéō), Phrygian ζευμάν (zeumán).
