Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀘𑀟𑀇 (caḍaï), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀘𑀠𑀢𑀺 (*caḍhati), with further origin unknown. Presence of retroflexion may point towards a substrate borrowing.
