Bengali edit

Etymology edit

Inherited from Middle Bengali ডাঠ (ḍaṭh), from Old Bengali ঢাঠ (ḍhāṭha), from Prakrit 𑀥𑀝𑁆𑀞 (dhaṭṭha), from Sanskrit धृष्ट (dhṛṣṭá), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰr̥ṣṭás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰr̥štás, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰr̥s-tós (bold, daring), from *dʰers- (to be bold, to dare), an *-s extension of *dʰer- (to hold, support). Cognate with Assamese ডাঠ (dath), Odia ଧିଟ (dhiṭô, shameless), Maithili 𑂛𑂲𑂘 (ḍhīṭh, firm), Bhojpuri ढीँठ (ḍhī̃ṭh, insolent), Gujarati ધીટ (dhīṭ), Marathi दाट (dāṭ, dense; thick), Hindi ढीठ (ḍhīṭh), Awadhi ढीठ (ḍhīṭh, obstinate), Punjabi ਢੱਠ (ḍhaṭṭha). Doublet of ঢিঠ (ḍhiṭh).
