Inherited from Early Assamese ভাই (bhai), from Sanskrit ভ্ৰাতৃ (bhrātṛ), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰráHtā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰráHtā, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰréh₂tēr (brother). Cognate with Sylheti ꠜꠣꠁ (bái, brother).
