Borrowed from Classical Persian مولانا (mawlānā), from Arabic مَوْلَانَا (mawlānā, literally “our lord”), from مَوْلَى (mawlā, “lord”) + ـنَا (-nā, “our”). Cognate with Hindustani مولانا (molānā) / मौलाना (maulānā).
