Borrowed from Classical Persian مولوی (mawlawī), nominalized from Arabic مَوْلَوِيّ (mawlawiyy, of the lord), from مَوْلَى (mawlā, lord). The last two alternative forms come via Hindustani مولوی (molvī) / मौलवी (maulvī).
