Etymology edit

Borrowed from Classical Persian شرمندگی, a compound of شرمنده (ashamed) (which is taken from Classical Persian شرم, which is ultimately from Middle Persian 𐭱𐭥𐭬 (šarm), from Avestan 𐬟𐬱𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬨𐬀 (fšarəma), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱormo- (suffering, pain). Cognate with Khotanese [script needed] (kṣär-, be ashamed) and English harm) and the suffix گی ().
