Borrowed from Classical Persian جوهر (jawhar), reborrowed from Arabic جَوْهَر (jawhar), from Early Classical Persian گوهر (gawhar), from Middle Persian gwhl (/gōhr, gōhar/, “substance, essence; jewel”). Compare Hindi जौहर (jauhar).
