Borrowed from Classical Persian جوهر (jawhar), reborrowed from Arabic جَوْهَر (jawhar), from Early Classical Persian گوهر (gawhar), from Middle Persian gwhl (/⁠gōhr, gōhar⁠/, substance, essence; jewel). Compare Hindi जौहर (jauhar).
