Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀤𑁂𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀤𑀺 (dekkhadi), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀤𑁂𑀔𑀢𑀺 (dekhati /dekkhati/), 𑀤𑀔𑀢𑀺 (dakhati /dakkhati/), from Sanskrit *देक्षति (dekṣati), *दृक्षति (dṛkṣati), somehow related to the root दृश् (dṛś). Cognate with Bengali দেখা (dekha), Nepali देख्नु (dekhnu), Hindi देखना (dekhnā), Sinhalese දකිනවා (dakinawā).
