Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀳𑀺𑀬𑀸 (vahiyā), from Sanskrit वहिका (vahikā, diary, ledger), a variant of वाहिका (vāhikā) (compounded in राजवाहिका (rājavāhikā, literally the bearer of (the records of) the king)), the feminine form of वाहक (vāhaka, bearer, carrier), a compound of वाह (vāha, carrying, from the root वह् (vah, to carry)) +‎ -क (-ka, agent suffix). Cognate with Bengali বই (boi), Hindustani بہی / बही (bahī), Marathi वही (vahī).
