Brown derives the term from పడు (paḍu, to fall); on the other hand, it is possibly borrowed from Pali pakkha, from Sanskrit पक्ष (pakṣa, side, flank). Cognate with Kannada ಪಕ್ಕ (pakka), Tamil பக்கம் (pakkam).
