From Proto-Tai *takᴰ (to scoop). Cognate with Lao ຕັກ (tak), Northern Thai ᨲᩢ᩠ᨠ, ᦎᧅ (ṫak), Shan တၵ်း (ták), Zhuang daek, Bouyei dagt.
