From Proto-Tai *daːᴬ, from Middle Chinese (MC drae, “smear”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨴᩤ, Lao ທາ (thā), ᦑᦱ (taa), Tai Dam ꪕꪱ, Shan တႃး (táa), Ahom 𑜄𑜠 (ta).
