From Proto-Tai *C̥.baːᴮ (shoulder).

Cognate with Northern Thai ᨷ᩵ᩤ, Lao ບ່າ (), Shan မႃႇ (màa) or ဝႃႇ (wàa), Tai Nüa ᥛᥣᥱ (mǎa), Ahom 𑜈𑜡 (), Zhuang mbaq. Compare Proto-Austronesian *qabaʀa (shoulder).
