From Pali paṭivatti (literally rolling back; turning back), from paṭi (back; against) + vatti (rolling; turning); equivalent to Thai ปฏิ (bpà-dtì) +‎ วัติ. Cognate with Khmer បដិវត្តន៍ (pa’de’voat), Lao ປະຕິວັດ.
