From Pali vivāda (dispute; controversy; contention; contest; etc); ultimately from Sanskrit विवाद (vivāda, idem); possibly via Old Khmer bibāda, bibādda, bibāta, bibātta, bibādha, bibvāda, bvibāta, bīybādhi, bœbāta (to dispute; to contest; etc). Cognate with Thai วิวาท (wí-wâat), Modern Khmer វិវាទ (viviət).
