From Pali maṇi (precious stone; gem; jewel) or Sanskrit मणि (maṇi, idem); probably via Old Khmer mnī, mni, *maṇi, muṇī (precious stone; gemstone). Cognate with Lao ມະນີ (ma nī), Northern Thai ᨾᨱᩦ, Modern Khmer មណី (mĕəʼnii).
