From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰmɔːᴬ (shaman), from Proto-Tai *ʰmoːᴬ (shaman), from Old Chinese (OC *ma). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩬᩴ, Khün ᩉ᩠ᨾᩳ, Lao ໝໍ (), ᦖᦸ (ṁoa), Tai Dam ꪢꪷ, Shan မေႃ (mǎu), Tai Nüa ᥛᥨᥝᥴ (mów), Ahom 𑜉𑜦𑜡 (), 𑜈𑜦𑜡 (), or 𑜈𑜨𑜦𑜡 (bwō), Zhuang mo (as in bohmo), Nong Zhuang moa.
