From Proto-Tai *ʰmwuːjᴬ (pubic hair). Cognate with Lao ໝອຍ (mǭi), Shan မွႆ (mǎui), Aiton မွႝ (moy), Phake မွႝ (moy), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜩 (moy), Zhuang mi, moi. Compare Proto-Austronesian *kumiS (whence Thao kumish (beard, pubic hair)).
