From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰnɛːpᴰ¹ᴸ (to hold with pincers, etc.; pincers). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨶᩯᨷ, Khün ᩉ᩠ᨶᩯᨷ, Lao ແໜບ (nǣp), ᦶᦐᧇᧈ (ṅaeb¹), Shan ၼႅပ်ႇ (nèp), Tai Nüa ᥘᥦᥙᥱ (lǎep), Phake ꩫိပ် (nip), Ahom *𑜃𑜢𑜆𑜫 (*nip).
