From Proto-Southwestern Tai *taj/aɰᴮ¹ (to creep; to move like a worm), from Proto-Tai *twajᴮ (to crawl over). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩱ᩵, Lao ໄຕ່ (tai), ᦺᦎᧈ (ṫay¹), Shan တႆႇ (tài), Tai Nüa ᥖᥭᥱ (tǎy), Ahom 𑜄𑜩 (tay).
