From Proto-Mon-Khmer *kʔɔk (to cough). Cognate with Halang kơ'ŏk, Pacoh carhoq, Pnar kʔɔʔ, Danau kᵊnɔʔ¹ˈ³. Compare Thai กระอัก (grà-àk, to cough up).
