From Old Khmer ខាល៑ (khāl), ខាល (khāla, “tiger (zodiac)”), from Vietic. Compare Vietnamese khái and Thai ขาล (kǎan).
Doublet of ខ្លា (khlaa), the inherited reflex of the Austroasiatic root.
