From (はな) (o-hana) + () (tsumi, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb () (tsumu).). Literally "flower-picking", from how women crouch.

(はな) (o-hana) is a more feminine expression than (はな) (hana).
