Shift from earlier otherwise-unattested adjective *糞しい (babashii, literally poopy), from (baba, poopoo, childish term; compare English poopoo) +‎ しい (-shii, adjective-forming suffix).[1][2] Appears in texts from the early 1800s.[3]
