      Toransujendā wa futsū, umareta toki to wa betsu no seibetsu o nozomu koto o arawashimasu. Taishite nonbainarī jendā no hito wa, “shintai to kokoro ga kanarazushimo betsu no seibetsu to iu wake de wa naku, dansei de mo josei de mo nai” no desu.
      Transgender typically means that one wishes to express a gender different from what they were assigned at birth. In contrast, people of non-binary gender say, “The body and the mind are not necessarily divided into genders, either male or female.”

      When the authoritative Merriam-Webster dictionary

selected as its 2019 “Word of the Year” the singular form they (a pronoun preferred by nonbinary people that does not specify gender), it was emblematic.

      Seibetsu ran ni wa kore made no otoko onna ni kuwaete nonbainarī to kisai dekiru yō ni natta. Nisenjūkyū-nen no natsu jiten de, nonbainarī ga sentaku dekiru no Beikoku no shū wa jūsan shū aru.
      Under ‘gender’ in addition to the earlier ‘male’ and ‘female’, it has become possible to indicate ‘nonbinary’. As of summer 2019, 13 US states allowed the nonbinary choice.
