JapaneseEdit

Japanese Wikipedia has an article on:

Kanji in this term

Grade: 1
on'yomi

EtymologyEdit

ローマ (Rome, Roman) +‎ (character).

Note that it is not ×ローマン字 (rōmanji) – ローマ is from Portuguese, not English; this is an easy mistake for English speakers to make. Compare however ローマン体, which does use ‘n’, because that word is borrowed from English.

PronunciationEdit

ローマ字 (katakana ローマジ, hiragana ろーまじ, hiragana and katakana ローマじ, romaji rōmaji)

  1. Latin alphabet
  2. romaji (Japanese written in the standard 26-character latin script).
