Etymology edit

Unknown. Attested from at least the sixteenth century.[1] Compare (かぶ) (kabu, turnip) or (かぶら) (kabura, turnip-shaped whistle).[2] Kokugo Dai Jiten notes a suggestion from Nippo Jisho (1603) that me refers to seaweed,[1] but compare also () (me, sprout; bud). See also 和布(わかめ) (wakame).
