In Japan, there are considered to be five simple machines, which are the same as the devices considered to be simple machines in the West, with the exception of this device, the inclined plane, which is not usually considered a simple machine in Japan. The five devices usually considered to be simple machines in Japan are the screw, wedge, pulley, lever, and wheel and axle.
