First attested in the Hanbul jajeon (韓佛字典 / 한불자전), 1880, as Early Modern Korean 깃겁다. Likely from 기ᇧ (kìsk-, to rejoice) +‎ —ㅸ— (—W—, adjectivizer), although no such form is attested within the Middle Korean corpus. Compare 즐겁다 (jeulgeopda).

Pronunciation edit

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [kik͈ʌ̹p̚t͈a̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: []
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
