From (nun, eye) +‎ (-e, locative marker) +‎ (-s-, genitive marker) +‎ 가시 (gasi, thorn), literally: "a thorn in the eye". Compare a similar expression in Chinese 眼中釘,肉中刺眼中钉,肉中刺 (yǎnzhōngdīng, ròuzhōngcì, “a nail in the eye, a thorn in the flesh”).
