๐Œฝ๐Œน๐Œณ๐…๐Œฐ

Gothic edit

Etymology edit

Contested; Lehmann list several possibilities. Possibly to be connected with the first element of Old Norse niรฐfวซlr, in which case the Old Norse word might mean "rust-yellow". Perhaps from Proto-Germanic *nidwล (โ€œgoing down, sinking, downfallโ€), or from a compound involving the same first element as Old English neowol, or perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ney- (โ€œto be aroused, shineโ€) (whence latin Latin niteล (โ€œto glitter, shineโ€)).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /หˆnid.wa/, [หˆniรฐ.wa]

Declension edit

Only attested in the nominative singular, which theoretically makes a masculine an-stem and feminine ล-stem equally likely possibilities. A feminine ล-stem is usually assumed.
