From a variant of Proto-Germanic *swehuraz, from Proto-Indo-European *swรฉแธฑuros. Cognate with Old English swฤ“or, Old High German swehur (German Schwรคher, German schwieger-), Middle Dutch swรชer, Old Swedish svรฆr (Swedish svรคr-). The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin socer, Ancient Greek แผ‘ฮบฯ…ฯฯŒฯ‚ (hekurรณs), Sanskrit เคถเฅเคตเคถเฅเคฐ (ล›vรกล›ura), Old East Slavic ัะฒะตะบั€ัŠ (svekrลญ) (Russian ัะฒั‘ะบะพั€ (svjรณkor)), Albanian vjehรซrr, Lithuanian ลกeลกuras.
