From Middle Persian [script needed] (Ardaxšīr), ultimately from Old Persian *Ṛtaxšaθra (“righteous ruler”)[1][2][3] (cf. Old Persian 𐎠𐎼𐎫𐎧𐏁𐏂𐎠 (Artaxšaçā), Parthian 𐭀𐭓𐭕𐭇𐭔𐭕𐭓 (ʾrtḥštr), Ancient Greek Ἀρταξέρξης (Artaxérxēs)).
