Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *-kos, *-ḱos. Cognates include Lithuanian -ingas, Proto-Slavic *-ъkъ, *-kъ, Proto-Germanic *-gaz, Latin -icus, Ancient Greek -ικός (-ikós), Sanskrit -शस (-śasa), -कस (-kasa).
