Etymology edit

From Proto-Celtic *-garyom, formed with the suffix *-om and the stem *gary-. This formation is also found in Gaulish, in adgarion from the Chamalières inscription.

    ar- + ‎-gaire → ‎airgaire (prohibition, verbal noun of ar·gair (to prohibit, forbid))
    frith- (against) + ‎-gaire → ‎frecrae (answer, verbal noun of fris·gair (to answer))

Usage notes edit

Syncopates to -cr(a)e when warranted. All derivatives of with this suffix are neuter io-stems.
