  1. (added to nouns) full of, covered in or with, made of, smelling of; designates a concrete thing that embodies or is invested with the qualities of another.
Examples:
xōchitl (flower)xōchiyoh (something flowery, full of flowers)
zacatl (grass)zacayoh (something grassy, covered with grass)
zoquitl (mud, clay)zoquiyoh (something muddy, covered with mud)

Usage notes edit

This particle undergoes progressive assimilation (where a consonantal sound assimilates into the one that precedes it) in certain situations:

  • After ch it becomes -choh
    ahhuachtli (dew)ahhuachchoh (something dewy, covered with dew)
  • After l it becomes -loh
    citlālin (star)citlālloh (something starry, full of stars)
  • After x it becomes -xoh
    nextli (ashes)nexxoh (something ashy, full of ashes)
  • After z it becomes -zoh
    eztli (blood)ezzoh (something bloody, covered with blood)
