ABC +‎ øyene, the first part comes from the first letters of the three islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao for the first definition, alternatively the three islands Admiralty Island, Baranof Island and Chichagof Island in Alaska, USA for the second definition. Last part is the definite plural of øy (island), from Old Norse ey (island), from Proto-Germanic *awjō (floodplain, meadow, island), from earlier *agwjō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ékʷeh₂ (water).
