Proto-Germanic
editEtymology
editFrom Pre-Germanic *ǵʰórneh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“intestines”) or *ǵʰern-. Probably cognate with Latin hernia, Lithuanian žarna.[1] Beekes reconstructs the PIE root with a laryngeal however, *ǵʰerH-, in relation to Ancient Greek χορδή (khordḗ, “guts, string made of gut”).[2]
