Appendix talk:Swadesh lists for interlingua

I'm updating this page to use a wiki table. While I'm at it, I'm going to switch the non Interlingua bits to match the table in Appendix:Swadesh_lists#Swadesh_list_table_of_Germanic_and_Romance_languages. Notably, this table does not include the control language Portuguese, nor does it include the secondary control Russian. You may ask yourself: but doesn't this page already include Portuguese? As it currently has only a few entries, I'm going to dispose of the column for now and complete it in one step after the basis is complete. --Josephholsten (talk) 17:52, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

In my opinion all pages such as this should be under Wiktionary:... somewhere, perhaps Wiktionary:Swadish:Interlingua - and all those empty [[]] are ugly as sin and totally useless. — Hippietrail 15:39, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Common words in other langs

I've been adding Spanish words to the Appendix:Swadesh lists for interlingua and have found it very helpful. Specifically, I'm finding basic words in spanish that did not have entries in Wiktionary, and have been able to add them as a fill in the tables. If there are people out there reasonably fluent in French, Italian, Portuguese, Interlingua, German, or Dutch, these languages could use help as well.

The only serious problem I've run into is that it isn't always clear what sense of the English word is intended, so I have difficulty choosing the right word in Spanish. For example, the word skin coule mean "the outer covering of the human body" or "the hide of an animal", and Spanish uses different words for these senses. Or again, the English verbs wipe and rub translate differently in spanish depending upon the purpose of the activity. Is one rubbing affectionately, rubbing in order to scratch, rubbing to remove something? In short, there are some words that I just can't fill in without knowing precisely what the intended meaning is for the English word. Please, please don't do this from your own research. Go to the other swadesh lists in wiktionary and reference them. If you find disagreement with your expectations, have the conversation there. This page should be very dumb: simply giving another representation of the data from other pages. Someday, it would be great to have this page be data driven like the french swadesh list.
