Ariër
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
Borrowed from German Arier, from Sanskrit आर्य (ārya).
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
Ariër m (plural Ariërs)
- (linguistics, historical) An Aryan; an Indo-Aryan or Indo-Iranian.
- (historical, otherwise offensive, white supremacy, see usage note) An Aryan (member of a supposed white subrace believed in by scientific racists).
Usage notes edit
- The scientific racist sense about a member of a supposed white subrace is strongly associated with fascism, in particular National Socialism, and is only considered inoffensive in descriptions of such beliefs, for instance in historical texts, or in certain kinds of facetious use. When used directly it is usually offensive.
