Literally church town, altered by folk etymology from Balla na h-Eaglaise (literally church wall), a calque of English Kirkwall, itself altered by folk etymology from Scots Kirkwaa, from Norn Kirkavå (literally church bay), from Old Norse Kirkjuvágr.
