Etymology edit

First attested as BODLISWERT in 1038-1057. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian *Bodil (a personal name) and wert (terp, artificial mound used for habitation). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name. See also West Frisian Boalsert.
