Attested in 1201 as Hermeriz; from Late or Medieval Latin Hermerici, in origin a Germanic personal name expressed as a Latin genitive, so meaning "Hermeric's property"; from Suevic (it's the same name of one Suevic king) or Gothic, from Proto-Germanic *Ermunarīks, from *ermunaz (whole) + *rīks (king).[1]
