Brian T A Worsnop MC, RNZIR and SAS. .1 sword- blade- 1892 pattern blade, straight, no shoulder, double edged for last 17 inches, fuller on each side, ornate etched design on blade including Royal coat of arms and George V cypher guard- half basket, pierced foliage nickel plated sheet steel, with George V cipher, turned down guard, sword knot slit near pommel, with leather sword knot attached grip- wood covered with fish-skin with (German silver) wire binding markings- blade- maker's name etched on ricasso- BY WARRANT - HENRY WILKINSON - PALL MALL - LONDON guard- New Zealand issue marks on inner side of guard- N (arrow) Z D - 480-25 .2- scabbard- rust coloured leather, silver coloured metal mouth, with detachable buckled belt attachment .3- frog- leather frog with metal fittings, marked on inside- LT.B.A.T. Notes | British (Pattern 1897) sword and scabbard, New Zealand Defence Belonged to Lt. Col. Jack A Worsnop MBE (1909-1957), and later to his son, Col. Brian T A Worsnop MC, RNZIR and SAS. Jack Worsnop joined the regular army in 1927, serving from 1931 to 1936 as a signals instructor, and in 1936 he was commissioned. During WW2 he served with the 23rd Infantry battalion in Greece and in the Middle East. After completing a course on armour he returned to New Zealand in 1942 as second-in-command of the 1st Army Tank Battalion at Waiouru. After a year he returned to active service in Italy and in 1944 was wounded during the drive on Florence. In 1946 after his return to New Zealand he was posted to Japan as commanding officer of the 1st New Zealand Divisional Cavalry Regiment. He continued serving in the regular army and at the time of his death in 1957 was area officer, Area 10, Southern Military District. (Information from obituary, undated (1957) newsclipping) Brian Worsnop graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in 1955 and was posted to the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. After many appointments in Malaya Major Brian Worsnop was posted as Officer Commanding Victor 2 Company in Vietnam (under the command of the 2nd Battalion. the Royal Australian Regiment (ANZAC) Battalion. He was awarded the Military Cross form outstanding service in Vietnam. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
