Etymology edit

FIrst attested as Berum in 1511. Calque of West Frisian Hantumer Utbuorren, derived from the toponym Hantum and a compound of ut (out-, outer) and the plural form of buer (house, cottage). Originally derived from the dative plural form of Old Frisian bêre (barn, house).
