First attested as heltmen in 1245. Etymology unknown. Likely of prehistoric origin. Unlikely to be derived from a compound of a personal name and man (“man, inhabitant”). Compare Bathmen, Berkum, Besthmen, Diermen, Fortmond, Giethmen, Hertme, Ratum, Reutum, Thamen, Wachtum and Wijthmen. Formerly an independent village.
